📖 What is FUE?
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a modern hair transplant technique where individual hair
follicles are extracted from the donor area (typically the back and sides of the scalp) and
transplanted to areas of thinning or baldness.
⚙️ How It Works
The surgeon uses a specialised micro-punch tool (typically 0.7–1.0mm) to extract individual
follicular units directly from the scalp. These are then carefully implanted into tiny incisions
made in the recipient area.
🔄 How It Differs From Other Techniques
- vs. FUT: No linear scar – leaves tiny dot-like scars that are barely
visible
- vs. DHI: Two-step process (extraction then implantation) vs. one-step with
DHI
- vs. Sapphire FUE: Uses steel blades vs. sapphire blades for incisions
✅ Potential Advantages
- Minimal scarring – tiny dot scars that heal well
- Faster recovery compared to FUT
- Can be performed on different body areas (beard, eyebrows, etc.)
- Suitable for patients who prefer shorter hairstyles
⚠️ Considerations
- Can be more time-consuming than FUT for large sessions
- Requires shaving of the donor area
- May require multiple sessions for extensive hair loss
🩺 Recovery
Most patients return to normal activities within 5–7 days. Scabbing typically falls off within
7–10 days, and transplanted hairs shed within 2–4 weeks (this is normal). New growth begins
around 3–4 months, with full results visible at 12–18 months.
👤 Who May Be Suitable
- Patients with pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia)
- Those with adequate donor hair density
- People with realistic expectations about results
- Patients who prefer a scarless option
📌 Educational Note: FUE is a widely used technique, but the "best" procedure
depends on individual factors such as hair type, extent of hair loss, and personal preferences.
